How to Arrange Furniture in a Living & Dining Room With an Open Floor Plan

An open floor plan allows you to be creative with your space and rearrange at a moment's notice to handle an unexpected event. An open plan also creates a more welcoming atmosphere with fewer walls to separate family members from one another. An open living and dining area makes it easier to serve large groups of people. You can arrange furniture in such a way that the two areas are completely separate without the need for dividers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Arrange the dining room table and chairs near the kitchen for easy service. If the table is a rectangular or oblong shape, you should arrange it with one end three or four feet from the kitchen entrance.

    2

Place an area rug under the table to accentuate the fact that it is a separate space. The rug should be slightly larger than the table for this purpose.

    3

Leave three or four feet between the areas to allow people to walk between them without difficulty.

    4

Make your sofa the central piece in the living area. It should face the focal point of the room, away from the dining area. The focal point may be a fireplace, entertainment center or a window with a great view.

    5

Put the chairs on each side of the couch, creating a square or rectangle with the couch and focal point. Each item should be a few feet away from the others.
