How to Make a Small Dining Room Look Bigger

How to Make a Small Dining Room Look Bigger

Whether you use your dining room for everyday meals with the family or only for holiday meals, large gatherings or special occasions, if it is small it may feel cramped and cluttered, especially when filled with people. Luckily, by employing a few decorating strategies, you can help make that small dining room look and feel bigger. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Remove all unnecessary furniture. A small dining room crammed with furniture will look smaller. Keep it simple with a table, chairs and one or two small cabinets.

    2

Replace your dining room table with a smaller model. A smaller table will create the illusion of more space. Choose a table with extra, removable leaves to accommodate more guests when needed. Keep chairs pushed in when not in use.

    3

Open up windows to add more light to the dining room by keeping window treatments simple. The more light in the room, the larger it will appear. If the windows don't let in lots of natural light, add plenty of artificial light from lamps and overhead fixtures to help the room feel more expansive.

    4

Hang a large mirror on the opposite side of the dining room from its largest window. This creates the illusion that you have more space in the dining room than you really do by reflecting sunlight throughout the room.

    5

Paint the walls of your dining room a light color, such as a cream. Light colors on the walls and ceiling will make the room look larger, while darker colors will make it feel more cramped and small.
