How to Convert Metric to SAE

How to Convert Metric to SAE

The metric system is used throughout the world as the standard measurement system. It is based on groupings of ten units and is relatively easy to understand. In 1911, the Society of Automotive Engineers decided to use a measurement system that was completely different from the metric system. The SAE system is used as the standard measurement system for automotive components and manufacturing. To properly convert metric to SAE, you need to have a conversion table or locate one online.

Instructions

    1

    Obtain a metric-to-SAE conversion chart.

    2

Choose a measurement in metric terms that you want to convert to SAE.

    3

View the conversion chart. Multiply or decide by the conversion factor given for that particular unit of measurement. If the chart only contains a list of measurements and does not contain conversion factors, scan the chart for the measurement you want to convert. You will find the SAE conversion listed next to the metric measurement.
