How to Convert PPM Into Grams

How to Convert PPM Into Grams

Quantity-per-quantity measurements are pure numbers; they have no associated unit of measurement. In many fields of science and engineering, the need for such dimensionless quantities arises. Public municipalities, chemical plants, pharmaceutical facilities and the medical field are all examples of institutions and industries that deal with measurements of substances in small quantities. These levels may be of pollutants in water or air or the concentration of any component or substance that needs a description. The use and conversion of units allows these substances to be quantified and described in universal ways.

Instructions

    1

Write the conversion from parts per million (ppm) to milligrams (mg) per Liter (L) obtained from conversion tables, "1ppm = 1mg/L."

    2

Multiply parts per million by liters. For example, if given that the quantity of fluoride found in a 2-liter water sample was 1.20 ppm, convert from parts per million to milligrams by multiplying 1.20 ppm by two liters to obtain the amount of fluoride in milligrams -- 1.2 ppm x 2 liters = 2.4 mg.

    3

    Divide the result by 1,000 mg/g to obtain grams. From the example: 2.4mg / (1000mg/g) = .0024 g.
