Tablet personal computers (PC) refers to notebook computers that use a specialized pen, rather than a keyboard, for inputting information. According to "Pen Computing," a resource for mobile computing information, Microsoft hopes tablet PCs will replace notepads and journals for taking notes.
History
The idea for tablet PCs stems back to the early 1990s when pen-based computers proved to be commonly used. Bill Gates revealed the first tablet PC in 2000 as a part of Microsoft's business strategy for the future.
Types
Tablet personal computers come in two forms--traditional and convertible. Convertible tablets are thinner and contain pullout keyboards.
Software
The most basic software for these notebook computers includes a word processing program. More advanced software may include scheduling and spreadsheet programs.
Function
Tablet PCs work by using a specialized pen to write on the computer's LCD (liquid crystal display) touchscreen. The tablet PC's operating system then stores your handwriting as a graphic.
Considerations
Workers who commonly use tablet PCs in the workplace include firefighters, medics, police officers, machine operators, plant workers and construction workers. An advantage tablet PCs have over other personal computers in the workplace includes easier portability.
