How to Convert Metric to Building Measurements

How to Convert Metric to Building Measurements

While other countries have long since converted to metric measurements for construction as well as most other things, the United States still uses the Imperial system of measurements for building. This can mean there may be a need to convert from metric if using plans for buildings from abroad or actually constructing a building in a different country, for example. While it is fairly simple to convert from metric to Imperial, the best advice would be to check your calculations again and again before being satisfied you have them right. One small error can create a logistical disaster when erecting your building. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Use an online metric conversion calculator to work out the Imperial measurements for you from the metric ones you already have.

    2

Download software that will do the conversion for you if you are a competent computer user. There are many free conversion programs you can find online.

    3

Do the conversion yourself using a calculator. Find a conversion table that shows the Imperial measurements that are equal to each metric unit. A basic conversion table will show you that 1 centimeter is equal to 0.39 inches, and 1 meter is equal to 1.09 yards or 3.28 feet. Now, using the calculator, take the Imperial measurement and multiply it by the amount of centimeters or meters you want to convert. For example, if you want to know the Imperial measurement for 20 centimeters, multiply 0.39 by 20. The answer is 20 centimeters is equal to 7.8 inches.
