How to Convert Metric to Standard

How to Convert Metric to Standard

Standard units as a measurement term is interchangeable with U.S. standard, U.S. customary and imperial units. Metric, however, is always just that--short and simple, and used the world over. Standard units are very common in the United States, but in a global economy and society, this difference can create a disconnect. Metric-to-standard conversion charts are available, however, to help you make the calculations between the two.

Instructions

    1

Use your favorite search engine to find a metric-to-standard conversion chart. Input the keywords "conversion metric standard." Also input alternate keywords, such as "conversion metric U.S." and "conversion metric customary."

    2

Write your metric measurement on your paper to create a visual: e.g., 100 cm.

    3

Look at your conversion chart and narrow down the category your metric measurement belongs to. For example, centimeters is in the length category. Write down that category on your paper as a reminder if you need to refer back.

    4

Look at the conversion chart columns. The first column is for metric units. Look across to the middle for the "multiply by" column. Match the metric unit to the "multiply by" unit in the same row. For example, across from "centimeters (cm)" is the number 0.4, which is the multiplier to convert centimeters to inches.

    5

Go back to your paper and write the multiplication sign after the metric measurement, followed by the multiplier with an equal sign: 100 cm X 0.4 =.

    6

Turn on your calculator and type in the multiplicand (the first number). Press the multiplication key. Type in the multiplier (the second number). Press the "Equal" or "Enter" key to solve the equation.

    7

Write the product of the equation on your paper after the equation and add the new standard units. The final equation will be: 100 cm X 0.4 = 40 in.
