How do I Convert Work Tables to Conference Room Tables by Adding a Wood Table Top?

You can create a table in almost any size and shape by simply using a solid base and placing a wood table top over it. The base you use should be sturdy and big enough to support the weight of the table top, but not so big that a person would hit his knees on it when he pulls up a chair. Find two old desks in your office and a wooden table top. You will have an attractive and impressive-looking conference table with very little expense.

Instructions

    1

Measure the available space and determine what size table you need. As a general rule, a 7 foot by 4 foot table will seat eight comfortably.

    2

Buy a piece of -inch plywood from the home improvement center. Have the associate cut the wood to the size you want for your table top. Choose a wood that's smooth and has a wood grain you like.

    3

Place the work tables in the center of the room. Set the wooden table top in place. Adjust and move the table top and the work desks until the layout is comfortable. Move a chair up to the table to make sure the leg room is sufficient. Remove the table top.

    4

Paint or stain the wooden top and the trim before installing it on the work tables. This, however, is optional. If space allows, it's much easier and less messy to paint and stain outdoors.

    5

Insert construction adhesive into a glue gun. Squeeze the trigger to dispense the adhesive along the top of the work tables. Set the table atop the work desks. Clamp the top of the table to the work tables with c-clamps. Let the adhesive dry.

    6

Measure the length and width of the table top with a tape measure. Cut the trim mold to line the perimeter of the table. Set the molding in a miter box and line it up with the correct 45 degree angle. Cut the molding, so the corners meet neatly.

    7

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the trim and set in place. Secure with finish nails. Scoop wood filler onto a putty knife and spread it into the nail hole. Smooth with the edge of the putty knife and let the wood filler dry.
