What is a Round Table Conference?

What is a Round Table Conference?

Conferences and conventions are often comprised of several types of meeting formats. Large meetings, in particular, typically break up big groups by offering smaller sessions where attendees can discuss topics in depth. One example is the roundtable meeting.

Benefits

Roundtable sessions allow for greater flexibility than other meeting formats. Because the groups are small, roundtable sessions typically allow for in-depth and longer discussion. Groups meeting in such a setting may also share common interests, backgrounds and education, making for a more focused exchange.

Format

The length of a roundtable conference can vary, but generally lasts between 45 minutes and more than an hour. The meeting usually begins with a brief presentation led by the moderator, with attendees engaging in 30 minutes or more of feedback and discussion.

Moderators

Moderators leading roundtable conferences prepare in advance of the meeting by doing research and by creating handouts, if needed. Other visual aids are usually not required or expected. The moderator should approach the introduction as a prepared speech or presentation so that the remainder of the roundtable will progress, with attendees eager to share feedback.
