Make a Computer Desk

There are a large variety of computer desks out there. From traditional to contemporary, serene to gaudy, you can choose almost any style you want. And with computer equipment becoming lighter and more compact, size is no longer an issue. Build a unique computer desk that mounts directly into the corner of any room.

Instructions

    1

Search out antique shops, or recycled furniture shops like ReStore to find a surface that is to your liking. The focal point of your desk is going to be the surface, which in this case is going to be an old wooden door.

    2

Set the door in the corner of the room and flip it on its side, mimicking how it would look if it were a desk. If it is too long, use a saw to shorten it. Do the same if it is too wide. Don't forget to sand it down when you're done.

    3

Measure the area you want to use for you desk. Mark where the desk should begin with a pencil on the wall, do the same for the other end. Also be sure to mark the proper height. 26 inches is the standard for an ergonomically comfortable desk.

    4

Fasten the wood strips length-wise against the wall, using a drill. These are going to support the door that you will use as your desktop. You can also attach metal shelving brackets underneath for extra support.

    5

Place the door on top of your wood supports. You may also want to drill the door down into the wood, or you may attach large hinges to the door to secure it to the wall. If you choose this option, make sure you install the hinges on a stud or it may take the drywall down. This last option allows you to fold the door up for cleaning or when you need to use the space for something else. If you need a smooth surface for your desktop, add a glass tabletop piece.
