How Tall Should a Table Lamp Be?

Consider Location

According to the professionals at Shades of Light, "The correct height of the table lamp is determined by the seating piece and the height of the table beside it. The table lamp should be tall enough for the bottom of the lampshade to come to the eye level of the person seated beside it. This will provide the best light without glare from the bulb."

Consider Function

"If you are planning to use the lamp for reading, take measurements to be sure the lamp will be tall enough to cast its light over your shoulder," suggest the experts at Lighting Universe. "The bottom of the shade should be about even with your cheekbone when you are sitting."

Bottom Line

Don't feel bound by rules and measurements. Use lamps that appeal to you, while considering the guidelines. Designer Amely Wurmbrand suggests putting books under a table lamp you love if you need it a little higher. She adds, "You can also put two different table lamps on each side of the sofa" for added interest.
