How to Make an Overhead Table Lamp

How to Make an Overhead Table Lamp

Creative custom light fixtures can be crafted from almost anything non-flammable. Crafting an overhead table lamp from a simple metal kitchen colander can give a whimsical touch to kitchen lighting. With few materials and some spare time, you can create a conversation piece for your dinner parties. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Place colander on work surface with the bottom facing up. Wearing leather gloves, snip with the metal snips an opening large enough for the plug on the light kit cord to slip through easily. This step may take some muscle.

    2

Slip the plug attached the light kit through the opening. Make sure that you are threading the cord through the inside of the colander. You want the light to fit inside of the colander. Pull the cord through the opening until the light socket fits securely inside the colander when hanging. Set aside.

    3

Determine where you would like your hanging table lamp to hover over the table and screw a small tea hook into the ceiling. Most hanging lights hover between 28 and 32 inches above the tabletop. Secure the cord over the tea hook and lower the light to your desired hanging height. Swag the cord across the ceiling to the nearest outlet. Additional tea hooks may be needed as well as an extension cord if the cord provided with the light kit is not long enough. Do not plug in.

    4

Place a light bulb into the light socket and tighten. Plug the cord into the wall and turn on.
