How to Secure a Laptop to a Table

How to Secure a Laptop to a Table

Laptop computers are valuable machines that can be stolen if not secured properly. Laptop locks are a safe and secure way to prevent computer theft, especially in public settings such as a library or university dormitory. Securing your laptop to a table with a laptop lock is simple and easy, requiring only the laptop itself, a laptop lock and a table leg.

Laptop locks, similar to bicycle locks, can tether your machine to a heavy object by looping around the object.

Determine the style and type of lock you would like to secure your laptop with. Locks may utilize a key or a numerical code to open and several brands are available to consumers. Select from the links to laptop locks in the References section, and purchase the one you wish to use to secure your laptop.

Insert the lock mechanism into your laptop computer. The laptop lock is fitted with a uniquely shaped mechanism that allows you to literally insert the laptop lock into your computer, physically attaching it to the lock itself while the lock is then secured to an external (usually heavy) object. The laptop lock port on your laptop is a small hole no bigger than your thumbnail, usually located to the side or rear of your machine.

To protect your laptop from theft, you will need to secure your laptop lock to the large object (table, desk, bench etc.) in a manner that does not allow a thief to unloop the lock from around the large object (other methods of attaching a laptop lock to a table or desk involve damaging the object via carpentry and a power drill or nails). Take the cable portion of the laptop lock and carefully wrap it around the leg or section of the heavy table or desk very tightly at the highest and widest point of the object, ensuring there is no slack in the cable so the laptop lock cannot in any way be slipped off the desk or table. This way, your laptop itself is locked and secured to the object by the locking mechanism, while the remaining cable portion of the laptop lock is tightly wrapped around the highest and widest portion of the object to prevent removal of the cable.

Insert the locking mechanism into the lock connected to your laptop and configure your lock (see the manufacturer's instructions) with an access code if it does not use a physical key to unlock the device. Your laptop will then be locked securely to the table and can only be accessed by a code or key for the lock.
