How to Size a Lampshade

How to Size a Lampshade

Change the look of an existing lamp by using a different shade---most lamps will accommodate a variety of shade sizes and shapes. Generally, the shape of a lampshade should mimic the shape of the lamp's base, but don't limit yourself. Sometimes contradicting shapes are flattering. Keep in mind the height of lamp's harp, that bowed brass piece that fits around the light bulb and holds the shade above the lamp. If you wish to use a taller shade, use a taller harp. Also, consider where you wish to use the lamp before choosing a shade. For example, be certain that a shade with a very wide slant will still fit the space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure the width of the lamp shade across the top, the width across the bottom and the height down the side (also called the slant). These are typical shade measurements. In stores, most shades are sized by their bottom diameter measurement (12 inch, 13 inch, 14 inch, etc.). If you are replacing a shade and liked the look of the original, you now know its size.

    2

Consider the shape of your lamp base. Typical lamp base shapes include round (both bell and cylindrical), square, oval, rectangular and hexagonal. Lamp shades are available in all of these shapes as well.

    3

Measure the height of your lamp from the base's edge to the top of the lamp stem just below the socket cap. For a balanced look, choose a lamp shade (if not replacing an existing shade against which to compare a new shade) with a bottom diameter measurement within 2 inches the height of your lamp. For example, if your lamp is 12 inches tall, choose a lamp shade with a bottom diameter of 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14 inches.

    4

Consider the height of a shade, which should generally not exceed the height of the lamp's harp plus inch or be smaller than the height of the harp minus inch. For example, if a lamp's harp is 6 inches tall, choose a shade that is 5 to 6 inches tall.
