How to Build a Simple Computer Work Table

How to Build a Simple Computer Work Table

Computer work desks can range from expensive purchases to simple and mundane assembly of a level piece of wood propped up on supports. When building a simple, makeshift computer work desk, it is important to ensure the top of the desk is high enough for ease of working and so that there is ample leg room between the two supports on the left and right. For safety, the desk top should also be secured to the supports so the top doesn't slide off of them.

Instructions

    1

Set up milk crates to form supports for both sides of the work table. Four crates will be needed for the left side and four for the right side. For the left side, stack two milk crates on top of two others, so that there are two supports---one for the front left and one for the rear left corners of the table. Do the same for the right side supports. The result will be two supports for each side, and the height of the table top will be 3 feet from the floor when assembled.

    2

Set the milk crate supports so that the plywood table top can be set on them. After setting the plywood on top of the supports, slide the supports to the corners of the plywood so the edges line up evenly with the adjacent edges on each corner of the plywood. Arrange as neatly as possible and so there is a 3-foot space for leg room in the center of the table assembly.

    3

Drill a 1/2-inch hole in each corner of the plywood table top. Each hole should be drilled so that the bolt will extend through the center of each of the corner milk crates.

    4

Remove the wooden top from the milk crate supports and have someone assist in holding the wooden table top on its edge. Place a washer on each of the bolts and then slide one bolt into each of the four corner holes.

    5

Bolt four of the milk crates to the underside of the wooden top using a washer and a nut on each. The washers should make it possible to secure the crates to the underside in a solid manner. If necessary, obtain washers that are large enough in diameter to successfully secure the crates to the underside of the table top should the openings in the crates be larger than anticipated.

    6

Lift the table top and crate assembly, and set the mounted crates on the underside of the wooden top down onto the crates sitting on the floor. Milk crates are designed to stack, so position all of the crates so the top crates are neatly stacked on top of the bottom crates. This will complete assembly of the computer work table project.
